Covid-19 and SMAC 2020

We at Smoky Mountain Adventure Camp understand that summer camp 2020 has been one of the most anticipated ever and we were very much looking forward to getting outside and seeing all our new and returning campers in June. However, after much consideration and brainstorming we just cannot justify the risks of running SMAC this summer. As those of you who have joined us before know, part of what makes SMAC special is that we operate as a base camp; we load up the SMAC bus every day to go explore and experience the adventures in the surrounding area which puts us in direct contact with the local community. This makes it impossible to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19; while we could potentially ensure our campers are symptom free upon arrival, it would be impossible to ensure those with whom we interact are also symptom free. Additionally, the close quarters and social interaction which make camp memorable are not compatible with the current recognized recommendations for social distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19. Furthermore, our staff and campers come from all over the country and even the world, and with our focus always being on the safety and well-being of our participants, we do not feel comfortable encouraging this type of travel. We hope everyone continues to social distance, wash their hands and stay safe so that we can make SMAC 2021 the best ever!
