Frequently asked Questions
We wanted to answer some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from prospective campers and their parents. If you have any other questions, you can leave them in the comments, or email us at: info@smacamp.com and we will get back to you soon.
Where is your camp located?
We are in Cosby, TN, just off the Foothills Parkway and adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Cherokee National Forest. Many of our adventure activities are conducted in these natural settings.
Are you a Co-Ed Camp?
Yes. All campers eat meals and participate in the adventure-based activities together. They of course have separate cabins and bath facilities and a counselor is in the cabins with the campers every night.
How big is your camp?
Small! We love it that way. We are a family operated camp, opening our doors to only 25-45 campers per session.
What is the advantage of a small camp?
There is time to really get to know each child individually. Close friendships are formed. Some become lifelong friends. We have a very high returning camper rate each year and we attribute that to our size and our family feel.
Is this camp only for experienced campers and those with an adventurous spirit?
While we certainly welcome campers who already have a love for the great outdoors, we tailor each adventure to the experience of each camper, and everyone leaves with a new or expanded appreciation for the outdoors and a sense of adventure.
Must campers participate in every activity?
We certainly encourage all campers to participate in every activity we offer, but NO, no one will be forced to do anything against their will.
Who leads high adventure activities?
Adventure specialists collaborate with camp counselors to lead high adventure activities. This ensures a great camper/staff ratio and promotes safety.
What is your safety record?
EXCELLENT. We emphasize safety and have never had a severe incident occur.
What is your camper to staff ratio?
At SMAC we maintain at least a 4 to 1 staff to camper ratio, and during many high adventure activities the ratio is 3 to 1.
How do you select your staff?
All staff and counselors are selected from previous campers and close family friends. They are all well known by the directors. They enjoy the outdoors, are adventure enthusiasts, CPR and First Aid Certified, and trained in the adventure based activities we participate in.
Do you encourage sibling groups and friend groups to attend together?
Yes. While many campers come alone, there is nothing wrong with bringing a good friend or a sibling with you. (Ask about our sibling discounts.)
Can my child call home? Will I be able to contact my camper?
Campers are provided time to call home frequently. You may also email (or snail mail) your camper. Mail is printed and distributed every morning during breakfast.
What about cell phone use?
We have debated this topic a lot. Some camps ban cell phones all together, but we felt that was unreasonable, so we compromised. We keep all cell phones in a secure place, and distribute them during down times, and long bus rides.
How do you stay in touch with parents?
During camp we will post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more daily. You’ll know what we are up to each day.
Why choose SMAC?
We are a unique camp operated and staffed by fun loving, safety first individuals that make certain your child has the experience of a lifetime!
